Hi my beautiful readers! I hope you are all doing fine. Did you get a bit of luck and happiness from my latest article? Today I would like to share with you the adventure we had in Italy last summer, at the end of my stay. Jack managed to come visit me and we decided to work (me) and travel, taking advantage of the Japanese Obon holidays. We had a road trip from Lugano (Switzerland) to Bellaria Igea Marina (Italy) passing through beautiful places. I suggest you to take notes!
Stop 1: From Lugano to Lierna with the ferry
Our first stop was Lierna, a small and cute village by Como lake. To get there, we entered Italy from the East side of Lugano and reached Menaggio, another lake town, from which we took the ferry to Varenna. Once docked and disembarked, after a short ride we arrived in Lierna, where we could enjoy the sunset at Riva Bianca beach. During the next couple of days, we celebrated Ferragosto with part of my family and visited different places I used to go to as a kid. We started with a walk on Lierna’s lake side and then explored the old village and surrounding woods; then we adventured all the way up to Piona Abbey in Colico, where the monks show their artwork and sell their products; finally, we had a stroll around Mandello del Lario, which was hosting a market, and where a nun invited us inside a garden to have a look at an ancient turret. During those days we ate the best food, Italian gelato and pizza included.
Stop 2: From Lierna to Rocca San Casciano through Parma and Modena
Once our days by Como lake came to an end, we started our descent towards Rocca San Casciano, a tiny village surrounded by Emilia Romagna’s Apennines. But before arriving there, we decided to make a stop in Parma, where we spent one night (at the very nice Hotel Button), and Modena, where we spent half a day. Parma is famous all around the world for its prosciutto, and Parmigiano Reggiano cheese. But it is also an incredibly beautiful city, with an extremely cute city center. We saw Piazza Garibaldi, Piazza Duomo with the Diocesan Museum, the Baptistery, and Santa Maria Assunta Cathedral. We also visited the Puppet Museum and other churches. We had amazing meals in Trattoria al Tribunale (for lunch) and Trattoria Corrieri (for dinner), where we could enjoy the local cuisine. Modena on the next day did not let us down: First, we stopped at the Enzo Ferrari Museum, where we learnt about Enzo’s life and saw beautiful cars; then we proceeded through Ducale Estense park to reach the city center, where we had lunch at Bar Molinari. Finally, we visited the beautiful cathedral, the Ghirlandina tower, and the tombstone museum. Coming back, we passed by Piazza Roma, and I felt like Modena is so big that I absolutely need to come back again. After our exploration, we took the car and reached Rocca San Casciano passing through Modigliana, where we did some groceries and arrived at my grandma’s house just in time for dinner.
Stop 3: From quiet Rocca to Riviera Romagnola’s fun between Bellaria and Rimini
Rocca San Casciano is where my old relatives live. So, we spent a quiet couple of days mostly working (me), eating good food, chatting, and walking around the village. This place is famous for the Festa del Falò, which takes place every year in spring, attracting many people from all the surrounding cities and beyond. Since it is the place where I used to spend my summer holidays, every time I go back I feel like at home. After this sweet break, we had to reach our next and last stop: Bellaria Igea Marina, in the warm Riviera Romagnola. It is not so far from Rocca, so we arrived on time to get prepared for our first party, the Cocoricò Memorabilia at Rimini Beach Arena. We spent only one hour there, but it was enough to enjoy our first real post-covid event. The next day, we had a long walk on the beach and had lunch by the seaside at Ristorante Santa Lucia, while in the afternoon we relaxed to get ready for the next party: the Palio del Daino. It takes place in Mondaino, a small village that for one weekend a year goes back in time and becomes a Medieval town with shows, food, and products. We spent there a couple of hours, enough to make me want to go back to enjoy the entire festival in the future!
Stop 4: Beautiful Cesenatico and the University city of Urbino
We spent our last days working at home during the day (me) and relaxing or visiting places in the late afternoon and evening. We went swimming in the sea and had dinner with my cousin in Cesenatico at Restaurant La Cuccagna, where his partner works, and where pizza is incredibly large and with a wide choice of toppings! Later all together we had a stroll in Cesenatico, which is a beautiful city with an incredible harbour, Portocanale Leonardesco, which reminded me of Venezia. They showed us around, from the cute evening market to the beautiful little squares and streets, until a stylish cocktail bar where we stopped for a drink. The next day after work we decided to visit Urbino, an ancient walled UNESCO world heritage city in the Marche region. We saw the famous university, the Duomo square, Piazza della Repubblica, and we walked up until the painter Raffaello’s house, and the park with the ancient fortress with a breathtaking view over the city. Once back in Bellaria, we enjoyed an all-you-can-eat sushi dinner in a new restaurant called Mana Sushi, it was good!
Stop 5: From Bellaria to Lugano no-stop
We spent our very last couple of hours in Bellaria visiting the local market, which is amazing, in the very early morning, where we bought clothes and delicious food. Then we took the car and drove back to Lugano. I worked during the entire trip, and once we arrived, we had dinner with my parents with the food we bought at the market.
What a trip, do you agree? This was like the one we had in 2020, if you remember, but this time we travelled only around Italy. I must say that my birth country is incredibly beautiful, and it is always ready to surprise me every time I visit it. I can say the same for my beautiful Switzerland, which I will properly visit again the next time I come back.

Sosta 1: da Lugano a Lierna con il traghetto
La nostra prima tappa è stata Lierna, un piccolo e grazioso villaggio sul lago di Como. Per arrivarci, siamo entrati in Italia dalla parte est di Lugano e abbiamo raggiunto Menaggio, un’altra città lacustre, da cui abbiamo preso il traghetto per Varenna. Una volta attraccati e sbarcati, dopo un breve tragitto siamo arrivati a Lierna, dove abbiamo potuto goderci il tramonto dalla spiaggia di Riva Bianca. Nei due giorni successivi abbiamo festeggiato il Ferragosto con parte della mia famiglia e abbiamo visitato diversi luoghi che ero solita frequentare da bambina. Abbiamo iniziato con una passeggiata sul lungolago di Lierna, per poi esplorare l’antico borgo e i boschi circostanti; poi ci siamo avventurati fino all’Abbazia di Piona a Colico, dove i monaci espongono le loro opere d’arte e vendono i loro prodotti; infine, abbiamo fatto una passeggiata a Mandello del Lario, che ospitava un mercato, e dove una suora ci ha invitato a entrare in un giardino per dare un’occhiata a un’antica torretta. In quei giorni abbiamo mangiato il miglior cibo, gelato e pizza compresi.
Sosta 2: da Lierna a Rocca San Casciano passando per Parma e Modena
Una volta terminati i nostri giorni sul lago di Como, abbiamo iniziato la nostra discesa verso Rocca San Casciano, un piccolo paese circondato dagli Appennini dell’Emilia Romagna. Ma prima di arrivarci, abbiamo deciso di fare una sosta a Parma, dove abbiamo trascorso una notte (nel graziosissimo Hotel Button), e a Modena, dove siamo stati mezza giornata. Parma è famosa in tutto il mondo per il suo prosciutto e il Parmigiano Reggiano. Ma è anche una città incredibilmente bella, con un centro storico estremamente carino. Abbiamo visto Piazza Garibaldi, Piazza Duomo con il Museo Diocesano, il Battistero e la Cattedrale di Santa Maria Assunta. Siamo anche andati al Museo delle marionette e in altre chiese. Abbiamo mangiato benissimo alla Trattoria al Tribunale (a pranzo) e alla Trattoria Corrieri (a cena), dove si può gustare la cucina locale. Il giorno successivo Modena non ci ha deluso: Per prima cosa, ci siamo fermati al Museo Enzo Ferrari, dove abbiamo imparato riguardo la vita di Enzo e visto bellissime auto; poi abbiamo proseguito attraverso il parco Ducale Estense per raggiungere il centro della città, dove abbiamo pranzato al Bar Molinari. Infine, abbiamo visitato la bellissima cattedrale, la torre Ghirlandina e il museo delle lapidi. Tornando indietro, siamo passati per Piazza Roma e ho pensato che Modena è così grande che devo assolutamente tornarci di nuovo. Dopo l’esplorazione, siamo saliti in macchina e abbiamo raggiunto Rocca San Casciano passando per Modigliana, dove abbiamo fatto la spesa e siamo arrivati a casa di mia nonna giusto in tempo per la cena.
Sosta 3: dalla tranquilla Rocca al divertimento della Riviera Romagnola tra Bellaria e Rimini
A Rocca San Casciano vivono i miei vecchi parenti. Abbiamo quindi trascorso un paio di giorni tranquilli, lavorando (io), mangiando del buon cibo, chiacchierando e passeggiando per il paese. Questo luogo è famoso per la Festa del Falò, che si svolge ogni anno in primavera e che attira molte persone da tutte le città circostanti e non solo. Poiché è il luogo in cui trascorrevo le mie vacanze estive, ogni volta che ci torno mi sento come a casa. Dopo questa dolce pausa, abbiamo dovuto raggiungere la nostra prossima e ultima tappa: Bellaria Igea Marina, nella calda Riviera Romagnola. Non è molto distante da Rocca, quindi siamo arrivati in tempo per prepararci alla nostra prima festa, il Cocoricò Memorabilia alla Rimini Beach Arena. Siamo stati lì solo un’ora, ma è stata sufficiente per goderci il nostro primo vero evento post-covid. Il giorno successivo abbiamo fatto una lunga passeggiata sulla spiaggia e pranzato in riva al mare al Ristorante Santa Lucia, mentre nel pomeriggio ci siamo rilassati per prepararci alla festa successiva: il Palio del Daino. Si svolge a Mondaino, un piccolo paese che per un weekend all’anno torna indietro nel tempo e si trasforma in una città medievale con spettacoli, cibo e prodotti. Abbiamo trascorso lì un paio d’ore, sufficienti a farmi venire voglia di tornarci per godermi l’intera festa in futuro!
Sosta 4: la bella Cesenatico e la città universitaria di Urbino
Abbiamo trascorso gli ultimi giorni lavorando a casa durante il giorno (io) e rilassandoci o visitando luoghi nel tardo pomeriggio e la sera. Abbiamo fatto il bagno in mare e cenato con mio cugino a Cesenatico al Ristorante La Cuccagna, dove lavora la sua compagna, e dove la pizza è incredibilmente grande e con una vasta scelta di condimenti! Più tardi abbiamo fatto tutti insieme una passeggiata a Cesenatico, che è una bellissima città con un incredibile porto, il Portocanale Leonardesco, che mi ha ricordato Venezia. Ci hanno mostrato i dintorni, dal grazioso mercato serale alle belle piazzette e stradine, fino a un elegante cocktail bar dove ci siamo fermati per un drink. Il giorno successivo, dopo il lavoro, abbiamo deciso di visitare Urbino, un’antica città murata patrimonio dell’UNESCO nelle Marche. Abbiamo visto la famosa università, il Duomo, Piazza della Repubblica e abbiamo camminato fino alla casa del pittore Raffaello e al parco con l’antica fortezza con una vista mozzafiato sulla città. Una volta tornati a Bellaria, ci siamo goduti una cena a base di sushi in un nuovo ristorante chiamato Mana Sushi, era buono!
Sosta 5: da Bellaria a Lugano no-stop
Abbiamo trascorso le ultime due ore a Bellaria visitando il mercato locale, che è incredibile, la mattina presto, dove abbiamo comprato vestiti e cibo delizioso. Poi abbiamo preso la macchina e siamo tornati a Lugano. Ho lavorato per tutto il viaggio e, una volta arrivati, abbiamo cenato con i miei genitori con il cibo comprato al mercato.
Che viaggio, siete d’accordo? È stato come quello del 2020, se vi ricordate, ma questa volta abbiamo viaggiato solo in Italia. Devo dire che il mio Paese natale è incredibilmente bello ed è sempre pronto a sorprendermi ogni volta che lo visito. Posso dire lo stesso della mia bellissima Svizzera, che visiterò per bene nuovamente la prossima volta che vi tornerò.
