Japan Virtual Tours – Ibaraki Prefecture Part II: Sea, Relax, and Autumn Vibes

Hey everyone, how are you? I am already back with a second chapter about Ibaraki! Do you remember my latest article about this beautiful prefecture? Well, we recently went back there to experience something new. Let’s go!

Saturday: Oarai Beach Library, Hoshino Coffee, and Mito Art Tower
On Saturday, we departed by car from Tokyo early in the morning and reached Oarai Beach by lunch time. In this period of the year, they organized a cute library by the beach, and close to it there was a food truck from which we ordered pizza. It was too windy, so after various attempts to eat by the beach, we opted to finish our pizza in the car. With our bellies full, we returned to the sea to take pictures and collect some cute seashells. Once back in the car, we headed to our second stop, a real library in Mito City centre. The Ibaraki Prefectural Library in Mito has now a Hoshino Coffee branch inside, which is built in the luxurious entrance hall, where a huge white staircase brings you to the bookshelves. There, we had a snack, drank some coffee, tea, and relaxed on the stylish leather sofas. After our break, we walked around the library a bit and, looking at people studying, I missed my university time. Our last stop for the day was the Mito Art Tower, where unfortunately we couldn’t go up again because of Covid restrictions, and the exhibitions were scheduled for the following weekend. But luckily, the exhibition’s entrance hall was open anyway, and we could see some videos about the tower and its history, as well as a big, beautiful organ, and a little shop. Coming back from our visit, we did a bit of window shopping and then we had dinner in an Izakaya near the hotel. Our day ended with the hotel’s Onsen and a good night sleep.

Sunday: Hitachi Seaside Park and Oarai Yellow Port
We went back to Mito for an event in particular: the beautiful Kochia (summer cypress) turning red at the Hitachi Seaside Park! On Sunday morning, we took the car and drove there, and even if it had just opened, there were already so many people! We immediately went to the hill where last spring we saw the Blue Nemophila, now completely covered in pink Cosmos flowers (also called Akizakura or autumn cherry blossoms) and puffy red Kochia. It took us a couple of hours to go up the hill and come back down, because the view was stunning, and we needed to take many pictures and videos! We had lunch at different food stalls, where we also found tasty chestnuts, the first (and probably last) chestnuts we will eat this year. After lunch, we had the brilliant idea to rent bicycles! The last time we came to the Hitachi Seaside Park, we saw only half of it, while this time we could visit it entirely, cycling around through the many bicycle lanes. We also discovered that there is a beautiful Luna Park inside, but too many people and very long queues prevented us to go on the rides, something we will keep for a next time! We just grabbed a soft ice cream, enjoyed looking at people screaming on the rides, and finally brought the bicycle back to the rental space. A fun thing: The Hitachi Seaside Park turned 30 this year, just like me, what a honor! After leaving the park, we searched for a gas station, which brought us back to Oarai. And guess what, we found a crazy and amazing place, Oarai Yellow Port, where we had the best sushi plate ever! A funny thing of that place is that it is full of ancient memorabilia of any kind for sale, which make it look more like a museum than a shop! After dinner, we drove back to Tokyo, arriving just in time to go to sleep.

Ciao a tutti, come state? Sono già di ritorno con un secondo capitolo su Ibaraki! Vi ricordate il mio ultimo articolo su questa bellissima prefettura? Bene, recentemente ci siamo tornati per sperimentare qualcosa di nuovo. Andiamo!

Sabato: Biblioteca sulla spiaggia di Oarai, Hoshino caffè e Mito Art Tower
Il sabato siamo partiti con la macchina da Tokyo la mattina presto e abbiamo raggiunto Oarai Beach all’ora di pranzo. In questo periodo dell’anno, hanno organizzato una simpatica biblioteca sulla spiaggia, e vicino ad essa c’era un camioncino del cibo da cui abbiamo ordinato una pizza. C’era troppo vento, quindi dopo vari tentativi di mangiare sulla spiaggia, abbiamo optato per finire la pizza in macchina. Con la pancia piena, siamo tornati al mare per scattare foto e raccogliere alcune conchiglie carine. Una volta tornati in macchina, ci siamo diretti verso la nostra seconda tappa, una vera biblioteca nel centro di Mito. La Ibaraki Prefectural Library a Mito ha ora al suo interno una filiale dell’Hoshino Coffee, costruita nella lussuosa hall d’ingresso, dove un’enorme scala bianca vi porta agli scaffali dei libri. Lì, abbiamo fatto uno spuntino, bevuto del caffè, del tè e ci siamo rilassati sugli eleganti divani di pelle. Dopo la nostra pausa, abbiamo girato un po’ per la biblioteca e, guardando la gente che studiava, mi è mancato il mio periodo universitario. La nostra ultima tappa della giornata è stata la Mito Art Tower, dove purtroppo non siamo potuti salire di nuovo a causa delle restrizioni Covid, e le mostre erano programmate per il fine settimana successivo. Ma per fortuna la hall d’ingresso della mostra era comunque aperta, e abbiamo potuto vedere alcuni video sulla torre e la sua storia, oltre a un grande e bellissimo organo, e un piccolo negozio. Tornando dalla nostra visita, abbiamo fatto un po’ di window shopping e poi cenato in un Izakaya vicino all’hotel. La nostra giornata si è conclusa con l’Onsen dell’hotel e una bella dormita.

Domenica: Hitachi Seaside Park e Oarai Yellow Port
Siamo tornati a Mito per un evento in particolare: la bellissima Kochia (cipresso estivo) diventare rossa all’Hitachi Seaside Park! Domenica mattina, abbiamo preso la macchina e siamo andati lì, e anche se aveva appena aperto, c’era già un sacco gente! Siamo andati subito sulla collina dove la scorsa primavera avevamo visto la Nemophila blu, ora completamente ricoperta di fiori rosa Cosmos (chiamati anche Akizakura o fiori di ciliegio dell’utunno) e di Kochia rosse e paffute. Abbiamo impiegato un paio d’ore per salire e scendere dalla collina, perché la vista era stupenda, e avevamo bisogno di fare molte foto e video! Abbiamo pranzato in diverse bancarelle di cibo, dove abbiamo anche trovato gustose castagne, le prime (e probabilmente ultime) castagne che mangeremo quest’anno. Dopo pranzo, abbiamo avuto la brillante idea di noleggiare delle biciclette! L’ultima volta che siamo venuti all’Hitachi Seaside Park, ne abbiamo visto solo metà, mentre questa volta abbiamo potuto visitarlo interamente, pedalando tra le numerose piste ciclabili. Abbiamo anche scoperto che c’è un bellissimo Luna Park all’interno, ma troppa gente e code lunghissime ci hanno impedito di andare sulle giostre, cosa che terremo per una prossima volta! Ci siamo limitati a prendere un gelato soft, divertiti a guardare la gente che urlava sulle giostre, e infine abbiamo riportato la bicicletta al noleggio. Una cosa divertente: l’Hitachi Seaside Park ha compiuto 30 anni quest’anno, proprio come me, che onore! Dopo aver lasciato il parco, abbiamo cercato una stazione di servizio, che ci ha riportato a Oarai. E indovinate un po’, abbiamo trovato un posto incredibile, Oarai Yellow Port, dove abbiamo mangiato il miglior piatto di sushi di sempre! Una cosa divertente di quel posto è che è pieno di cimeli antichi di ogni tipo in vendita, che lo fanno sembrare più un museo che un negozio! Dopo cena, siamo tornati a Tokyo, arrivando giusto in tempo per andare a dormire.
